Making Connections

with Expository and Persuasive Writing

An Open Institute on College Readiness in Writing
from the San Antonio Writing Project

--Flier for Open Institute

Writing is about making meaning and making connections. In the new STAAR testing landscape, that means students must learn to write more informational and persuasive texts to prepare them for college and career writing. You are invited to spend a week on a college campus learning from college writing professors what college-level writing is really like.

Following the National Writing Project model of teachers-teaching-teachers, you will learn more strategies for connecting reading and writing and teaching expository and persuasive writing. You’ll see demonstrations of successful writing lessons from experienced San Antonio Writing Project Teacher Consultants. You’ll read selections from What is College-Level Writing by Patrick Sullivan, Readicide by Kelly Gallagher, The Literature Workshop by Sheridan Blau, and Designing Writing Assignments by Traci Gardner. You’ll also spend the week collaborating with fellow teachers to develop a writing assignment geared toward college-readiness standards you can use in the classroom next year.
